EST does not include EDT: they are two different things. EST covers the months
from late October to early April: EDT covers the summer time. It becomes
important if the reader is in a place that doesn't go to daylight savings time
-- they won't be able to figure out accurately what the time is in New York.
I think if you say "eastern time" you're more likely to confuse people.
