In my (formerly extensive) travel experience, the fastest way through US
Customs is to carry a squalling baby. (Two is even better.) I used to travel
overseas twice a year with my (non US citizen) husband. Before we had children
getting through customs was always very involved and slow. (They even shaved a
bar of soap we were carrying into shreds looking for contraband!) After er had
children, especially if they were cranky and unpleasant, we mostly just got
waived through. I stopped traveling them when the children were 2 and 3
years old and it still worked up to that age, but I can't say how much
longer it would work.
