For compound page numbering, I generally try to convince my employers to use
a decimal system (3.17, 4.2, &c) rather than a hyphenated system: In the
TOC, 3.17 is less unclear (esp. to nonengineers) than 3-17, which many users
read as a RANGE of pages; in the index, 3.17-3.19 is easier for EVERYBODY
than 3-17 - 3. 19.
