An exemption to the eight hour day was what the tech companies in Silicon Valley were asking for in the 90s. Not really sure how it ended up becoming what it was.

And I recall a lot of grumbling right here on this list from writers who saw being reclassified to hourly as a loss of status. It was when the decision came down on the Sun suit, I think.

I've never heard a tech writer complain about not being exempt.
