However, last weekend I was attending a CERT training class. The
instructor, an EMT, asked us to introduce ourselves and say what we do
for a living. I simply said that I am a tech writer; his response was
"Oh, wow!", delivered in a sincere and appreciative tone. (People who
depend on accurate writing DO appreciate us.) Made me feel all warm and
fuzzy.

In thinking over the responses I have had over the years, I have never really had anyone say they appreciate technical writing or writers, except for one recruiter in 1995 who was excited to learn that I did technical writing before I knew I could get actually get paid to do what I enjoyed doing. I could use warm fuzzies. Maybe there should be a "Celebrate Technical Writers" day.

Later I was even warmer (though less fuzzy) as, on the hottest day ever
recorded in Atlanta, we went outside to practice fire-suppression
drills! Yes, we set fires so that we could practice putting them out.
Great fun.

Speaking of fires, I was deep-frying potato chips on my stove last night and some oil spilled over and caught fire. I watched it, hoping it would burn out on its own, since I didn't want to waste a good fire extinguisher charge on that, but it didn't. I turned off the heat and the oil kept boiling, so I figured the stove was pretty much on fire with a good strong flame. I found my baking soda and sprinkled some of that on there to put out the flame and finished cooking my fries in a now charred copper frying pan, then I watched Hell's Kitchen while enjoying homemade black bean chili and charred taters with all the fixin's.
