My wife insists on telling everyone that I am a writer, this leads to a lot
of disappointed people when they are eventually introduced to me.

I don't tend to use my proper title unless the person I'm talking to seems
likely to know what a Technical Writer is, I go straight to "I write user
guides for computer software".
