Actually, the definition of an acronym is an abbreviated set of words to
form a word. Such is radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging) and sonar (SOund

They are words.

USAF is an abbreviation.
LED is an abbreviation.
RADAR is an acronym, as it is a word.
COBOL is an acronym (COmmon Business Oriented Language)

The confusion is that military contracts frequently require an acronym list
which is really an abbreviation and acronym list.
