TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
There are only two logical solutions to your problem.
Either start with something like this:
"Before you begin, you will need to make a record of the following instructions..."
Or tell the user to copy down the local or web-based location of the file and go to it when the computer restarts:
"1. In order to complete this task, you will need to shut down your computer. When your computer restarts go to
{file address/web address}
Make a copy of this {file location/web address} now...
2. If you have made a copy of the file location/web address, shut down your computer now."
Best
