Dan,
I used an early incarnation of Agilewords that was set up for XML documents, and I have met the folks who run the site. They have been around for a while working on this problem in various forms, and I think they know what they're doing.
I have not used their service with Word (mercifully, my need to deal with Word is minimal:-), but given my experience with their previous work, I think it would be well worth trying out. And, they make it really easy (i.e., free) to evaluate the service, so the only cost would be your time.
Best Regards,
Dick Hamilton
