The original poster asked:
Anyone know what to call constructions like "K9" (as in "K9 Unit,"
referring to a canine unit of a police department)?
It's not an acronym, abbreviation or initialism....
And anyone have examples of similar words?
to which the obvious query for clarification is "'Like' 'K9' in what
respect?". This would force him to provide similar words to illustrate
the sort of thing he's talking about, which would force him to answer
his own question, which is fair because it is Friday afternoon.

(In agreement with the Wikipedia definition [but not because of it], I
believe "abbreviation" is a shortening of a word by any method. In this
case, it's shortened via substitution of homophones for syllables. So,
in my opinion, "K9" is in fact an abbreviation. It never would've
occurred to me to think it can't be an abbreviation just because its
characters are not contained in the original.)
