The process you're considering is the one we use.

There are more options for adding text than Adobe's sticky notes. You can
actually attach a document to the review copy of the file. That comes in
handy when adding a lot of information, or wanting to add/change a diagram,
etc.

The main benefit of this process is that all of the reviewers can see what
others have added/changed. I've had a couple of situation where someone
commented on someone else's comment - and clarified incorrect information.
To me, this is invaluable.

I don't work in Word, so I would rather not go there.
