Another way to test, not perfect but free and fairly easy to set up.

Download Open Office which has file formats in its "save as"
menus back to Word 95 and Word 6.0. Play with saving in
various formats, then loading in Word or OO, and see what
happens.

One catch; don't use a default install of OO on your main
machine, just clicking OK everywhere. This will change the
registry so OO rather than Word loads for .doc files, OO
rather than Excel for .xls and so on.
