That problem-default was recognized some time back (too many of the same
complaint on the OOo support mailing list), so recent releases of
OpenOffice have the opposite default (OOo doesn't take over the file
associations), and a dialog during install/setup that tells you exactly
why you would make one or the other choice, and suggests that you don't
make OOo the default if you are just evaluating it.
