There is a third option to add to Jim's list:
could that engineer perhaps be as uncomfortable with metaphor
as a poet can be with algorithms?
Remember that engineer in John Cheever's
"The Geometry of Love" (in _The World of Apples_)?
Or the bunch of engineers in Kurt Vonnegut's _Player Piano_?
They were also uncomfortable with everything non-engineered.

Cheers,

YJ

If master / slave can indeed be replaced by these diverse pairings (and some others that have been suggested, say "commander / obeyer"), that would seem to indicate that master / slave is not sufficiently nuanced to describe the various things that are happening. The use of master / slave in technical contexts would thus become suspect, not because it is offensive, but because it is ambiguous.
