If master / slave can indeed be replaced by these diverse pairings (and some others that have been suggested, say "commander / obeyer"), that would seem to indicate that master / slave is not sufficiently nuanced to describe the various things that are happening. The use of master / slave in technical contexts would thus become suspect, not because it is offensive, but because it is ambiguous.
