Please tell the engineer that, as in most things this side of a PC,
virtual slaves and masters are not actual slaves and masters.

For more ideas, there's _Upstairs, Downstairs_---the British TV show... :-)
or king & subject, lord & serf, knight & knave...

And finally, is he upset by "user" because of the drug trade?

This discussion came up recently around here. The designer of some new functionality in our system replaced "master/slave" with "parent/child." No objections so far have come to my attention. That said, if master/slave is suitable for your audience, use that phrase.
