We use level 1 through 4 numbered headings (1, 1.1, 1.1.1, and so on) for
our chapters along with table and figure captions (Table 1.1, 1.2 and Figure
1.1, 1.2). For the most part that works pretty well. However, all bets are
off when it comes to appendices. I haven't been able to figure out what to
do to get the auto numbering to work in the Appendices. We have a separate
set of styles (Appendix 1, 2, 3, & 4) for the appendices and the
autonumbering (often) works well. The problems begin when we try to get
figures and tables to autonumber correctly in the appendices.
Is there a way to get tables to autonumber as Table A.1, A.2, etc and Figure
A.1, A.2? In the caption dialog, when I specify the numbering, I'm prompted
for what the chapter starts with and only various Heading numbers are
displayed as options. I thought if I could specify that the chapter starts
with the style Appendix 1, I might be able to get the autonumbering to work
correctly.
At this point, all I can come up with is to hand number each figure and
caption and then make all of my cross references manual cross-references.
This method works, but makes maintenance very tedious and error prone.
Thanks in advance for any ideas. Perhaps that seq field solution that I hear
about from time to time might work here. I wonder if I could implement it
just for the appendices.
