J. Paul:

In a system where the chapters were separate files, you can continue to use Heading 1 through 4, but redefine the number format to be Alphabetic.

In a system where the document is a single file, you can use Heading 5 through 8, defined to mirror Heading 1 through 4, with the exception of an Alphabetic numbering scheme.

There is no thoroughly effective way to use chapter number prefixing (Table 1.3, Figure A.4 etc.) without using the built-in headings, and without assigning outline numbering to those headings.

You can try using SEQ fields to create the heading numbers and prefixes (for figures, tables, and page numbers). This can be made to work for the TOC and index as well. But it falls short when you come to cross-referencing.

By far the easiest way is to use the built-in headings.

By the way, in my deviant mind, the number for the glossary is Y, and the number for the index is Z.
