The correct spelling now is just "Ukraine". It used to be commonly called
"the Ukraine" when it was still one of the republics of the Soviet Union.
There are two main versions of the etymology for the country name
(Ukraina): one has it that the name is derived from "region" and the other
says that it's derived from "borderland". If the latter is true, the
omission of the article in English after the country's independence makes
sense.
