part of the name itself. It's derived from 'the low lands', long before
we became a kingdom.>>

However, I have heard that the following are correct:

* Just "Ukraine" not "the Ukraine"

* Just "Sudan" not "the Sudan"

Can anyone confirm? English speakers frequently place "the" (all lower
case) before the names of these countries. Always wondered why...
