I think the arguments presented are a bit specious. It's not the fault of the
tool if the communicator is a poor presenter and doesn't know how to best
present their material.
While the out-of-the-box templates and many corporate templates lend themselves
to simplistic presentations, it is entirely up to the user to determine how much
they want to cram on a slide. And the 8-seconds speaking time bit is true
rubbish. What you say should not be a verbatim of what's on the slide. Each
bullet could cover many minutes of discussion.
But with a static background, and dynamic bullets, graphs, useful animations,
and supporting data the idea of slides can quickly be eliminated. You can run
through dozens a minute or one ever 10 minutes. All depends on what you are
presenting and your presentation style.
It is not within the power of anything on a computer to make you dumb or
intelligent. What you put in is what you get out.
