I'm reading an interesting and timely book right now called Presenting
to Win: The art of telling a story (ISBN 0-13-046413-9). I've just
started it, so I'll let you know how it ends when I am finished.

I think the arguments presented are a bit specious. It's not the fault
of the tool if the communicator is a poor presenter and doesn't know how
to best present their material.
While the out-of-the-box templates and many corporate templates lend
themselves to simplistic presentations, it is entirely up to the user to
determine how much they want to cram on a slide. And the 8-seconds
speaking time bit is true rubbish. What you say should not be a verbatim
of what's on the slide. Each bullet could cover many minutes of
discussion.
But with a static background, and dynamic bullets, graphs, useful
animations, and supporting data the idea of slides can quickly be
eliminated. You can run through dozens a minute or one ever 10 minutes.
All depends on what you are presenting and your presentation style.
It is not within the power of anything on a computer to make you dumb or
intelligent. What you put in is what you get out.
