The current thread about certification and licensing got me wondering about how much employers regard an English degree as sine qua non for a tech writer.

David,

We have had various debates about what we perhaps should or shouldn't have as qualifications and experience, and I think we can assume that, amongst us all, we have a cross-section of virtually everything. I think the demand for some of the more specific, non-practical qualifications/experience (e.g. Frame, Acrobat, RoboHelp, etc.) may hurt the employer as much as the potential employee.

Having been looking for a permanent gig for some time, I have seen the same advertisements pop up again and again recently. (If anybody wants to work in the West Country in England and has knowledge of defence helicopters, I'll find the details again!) The two that spring to mind are for a recruitment consultant specialising in techical writers (don't recall the specific requirements), and a post for a technical writer that must have a 2.1 degree, preferably in a technical discipline, AND an A or B grade in English at 'A'-level (high school grade 11/12). Now 'every' educational establishment that runs this level of course runs English Literature, but *very* few run the English language course. Not surprisingly this vacancy has been popping up on the jobsites for about two months now.

So demanding somehting so specific can cut both ways. Fortunately most employers aren't so blinkered.

Best regards,
Ant
