True story. My company supplies a complete system, including COTS
hardware and our own software, to a multi-billion-dollar corporation
that ships its products around the world. We tried to convince the
corporation (which has customers around the world) not to order simple
items such as Ethernet cables as official spare parts, since it would
be cheaper for the customers to purchase their own. No dice. So the
following scenario may soon come to pass:

Customer in China buys a system from the corporation, but the Ethernet
cable is defective. Customer calls the corporation, which contacts us
using their worldwide spare parts ordering system. We order the cable
from the hardware supplier in the US, get it, and send it on to the
corporation -- which happens to be in the same Big City as the
hardware manufacturer, a thousand miles away from us. The Ethernet
cable was manufactured in China, shipped to the hardware supplier in
Big City USA, shipped to us in Our City, shipped to the corporation in
Big City, and shipped to the customer in China!

I have to document the ordering process so it can be audited, to
ensure that the proper spare part makes not only the round trip from
China to the US, but also the round trip from Big City to Our City. My
boss calls this "fueling the economy" -- and that's not to mention the
double customs fees!
