The current thread about certification and licensing got me wondering about how much employers regard an English degree as sine qua non for a tech writer. My undergraduate degree is in Theology and my Masters in Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern studies. I've been a tech writer for 11 years now and only once was I dismissed by a recruiter because I don't have an English degree. Still, the experience left me a little shaken and I've always worried that at some future time another recruiter will file my resume in the round bin next to his or her desk because they see an English degree as the YES/NO switch when vetting applications.

So, I'm curious: how many tech writers have English degrees? Has anyone else found that not having an English degree has hurt them at some time in their career?
