If you want to live life in a cubicle, do what others tell you, and not give a fig about the world, then stay focused on your technology and never venture beyond it. You will develop into a full-fledged geek. And I don't mean that in a good way.

But, if you hope to grow into a full, enriched person with more to offer the world and others than just your technology, consider these actions:

1. Make sure you can read and write in the English language, befitting a college graduate in any discipline.
2. Take a Geography class. Americans are terribly ignorant of the rest of the world and yet must interact with it.
3. Expose yourself to music and art. College may be the only time you learn some appreciation and differentiation of these things.
4. Stretch your body as well as your mind. Intellectual focus can be very stressful.
5. Develop your spiritual side if that is your wont.
6. Be charitable. Not everyone will be as talented and fortunate as you.

I'll be presenting at the annual "TestOut Challenge 2003" tomorrow, an event
sponsored by the Utah Dept. of Education to encourage HS/college students to
pursue careers in science & technology. The topic of my 25-min. breakout
session is "Technology isn't just for Geeks!" and is designed to get
students thinking about technology career possibilities in areas that aren't
typically thought of in the same breath with technology (i.e., english, art,
music, business, etc.).
