TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
These are obvious, but I suppose they bear repeating:
Most importantly, make yourself a Web site and make it look
professional. Host your resume and, regardless of your field, some
content on this site. You're a musician? Include some compositions and
sound samples. You're an actor? Include an MP3 of you doing a monologue,
or write an essay or two on your favourite actors or plays.
Network. Keep in touch with all your friends. One of them's sure to be
really successful and you ride their coattails. I'm sort of kidding
about that one, but only sort of.

Subject: "technology isn't just for geeks" presentation - ideas?
I've prepared a fun, lighthearted approach to the topic, and am ready to
go
with it, but in looking at it today, think I could possibly beef up the
part
of it I call "Making Yourself Marketable." In this section, I'm giving
them
some suggestions for the types of classes they can include - probably as
electives/minors/secondary majors - that will help them to graduate with
a
marketable skill (how many of us graduated with a liberal arts degree
and
still weren't really prepared to work anywhere but in the food service
industry?).
