TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'll be presenting at the annual "TestOut Challenge 2003" tomorrow, an event
sponsored by the Utah Dept. of Education to encourage HS/college students to
pursue careers in science & technology. The topic of my 25-min. breakout
session is "Technology isn't just for Geeks!" and is designed to get
students thinking about technology career possibilities in areas that aren't
typically thought of in the same breath with technology (i.e., english, art,
music, business, etc.).
I've prepared a fun, lighthearted approach to the topic, and am ready to go
with it, but in looking at it today, think I could possibly beef up the part
of it I call "Making Yourself Marketable." In this section, I'm giving them
some suggestions for the types of classes they can include - probably as
electives/minors/secondary majors - that will help them to graduate with a
marketable skill (how many of us graduated with a liberal arts degree and
still weren't really prepared to work anywhere but in the food service
industry?).
I've made great use of many of the discussions we've had on the list over
the past few months - this list is a gold mine. Any quick thoughts you might
have on this specific topic would be appreciated.
thnx,
L
