I have scrupulously followed setting up Numbered Styles in Word per Alexandra Sutherland's brilliant contribution of 1999. Essentially, she has you Create or Modify a numbered style following these rules:

1. Never base them on any of the standard "List" styles.
2. Create by starting with Bullets and Numbering dialog and click Numbering.
3. Click Customize.
4. Do your Indented At settings and numeric/alphabetic format there.

It was only after I set up two styles for bullets and two for numbering that things got stable for me. Only one gotcha left. The second "numbered" style was created like the indents for Bullet 2 Style and started at "a" and was supposed to go on with "b", "c", and so on. It does what it is supposed to do the first time it is applied. Any subsequent application of this style comes up continuing the sequence however and stubbornly refuses to Restart Numbering. (Yes, I know a, b, c, are not numbers.) In fact, Restart is always disabled. I could live without this style, but would prefer to have it in and working. Any help would be appreciated. - Carol Gilbert
