Somehow I think "state of the art" is a concept implying more advanced technology than "mainstream."

I think you are right: "state of the art" is something that barely isn't "bleeding edge" any more. That is, "state of the art" implies the most advanced equipment (or whatever) that isn't experimental or semi-experimental any more.

"Mainstream" implies "used by the largest group of people" or "used typically". While this is not directly contradictory to "state of the art", the two terms sit oddly together. Usually, you want "state of the art" to be read as "better than what the next guy (or company) has", and that _is_ a contradiction with "mainstream" ("what everybody else has").

Maybe your sales guy can rephrase the statement to better emphasize his main point.
