So the question is: Does anyone have any experience or ideas about writing a non-technical user's guide for the totally clueless?

This sounds like a user guide may not be the right medium to reach these people. From your description it seems that not all of them may be comfortable with reading manuals (or even be able to?).

Rather, it could be more promising to redesign the user interface along the lines of children's software, where neither familiarity with computers nor reading competence can be assumed.

(Another option would be to charge for tech support and create an instant profit center ;-)
