Interesting. Aside from the fact that you've given me an inflated opinion of my powers of deduction (Move, over, Mr. Holmes!), I'm glad to have the explanation. Thanks!

Given the difficulty I've had in hiring in good writers, I can see how a company might go this route. It not only saves the cost of ads or headhunters, but also the time spent shifting through resumes sent by unqualified applicants - in my experience, any ad can generate dozens or even hundreds of these applications, requiring someone to scan them just on the off-chance that a few might be worthwhile . It might result in fewer qualified applicants, but perhaps not greatly so.
