Given the difficulty I've had in hiring in good writers, I can see how a company might go this route. It not only saves the cost of ads or headhunters, but also the time spent shifting through resumes sent by unqualified applicants - in my experience, any ad can generate dozens or even hundreds of these applications, requiring someone to scan them just on the off-chance that a few might be worthwhile . It might result in fewer qualified applicants, but perhaps not greatly so.
