If a document is staying on one computer, that will
work like a charm and be quick and easy to boot. If
it's being lobbed around shared drives (the situation
in my old company) I found that Word kept overwriting
the heading styles, even if you attached a template.

The work-around for that was to replace the outline
numbering with sequential fields, which will also allow
you to mix numbers and letters.

(Obligatory disclaimer - my standard writing sample is
on this very process, so I'm biased. However, it did
solve the company's problem of shifting styles.)
