Your first step is to decide how many heading levels
you're going to use in the body of your doc. Once
you've decided, go into Format > Bullets & Numbering
and click the Outline Numbered tab.
Select the style that most closely resembles the
numbering scheme you want to use, then click Customize.
If you've decided to use four heading levels in your
doc, set up headings 1 thru 4 as your basic numbering
scheme. When you get to heading 5, switch to the
lettering or lettering/numbering scheme you want to
use in your appendixes.
Works like a charm; I do it all the time.
