Greetings Jim,

I am no hiring expert, but I think I would disqualify any applicant that was
"overseas" for a number of simple reasons:

1) In order to interview you face to face, a great amount of travel is
required. I do not have a passport, so I would have to ask you to fly half
way around the world just to talk with you for a few hours. That even sounds
kinda unreasonable for a technical writing job. (oh no, here comes the $250
an hour flames) There are plenty of qualified candidates local, or a few
states away.

2) Relocation is a given. Are you looking for a company to relocate you?
Relocation is expensive. The ware and tear on the windshield wipers on the
moving truck as it crosses the Pacific ocean would kill a budget right
there.

But seriously, relocation is expensive, time consuming, and can become a
political mess if you want to naturalize you new wife and her extended
family. This my all be untrue, but it runs through the mind.

3) What if the company is one of those three and four interview companies.
They will have to fly you around the world how many time to compare you with
the other three local candidates?

Hang in there Jim, Maybe you can take a vacation (holiday?) to the US and
use the time to look for a technical writing job.

Best of luck to you in your search. It is rarely easy, but mostly worth your
trouble in the end.

Regards,

Barry Kieffer
Senior Technical Writer
Tektronix, Inc.
Speaking for myself, not my employer, who, if they knew me better, would
duct tape my mouth, and cut my internet wire.
