The way it works: in the TOC (a big field), each page number is also a
field: specifically a PAGEREF field which uses a "\h" switch to make it a
hyperlink. As Kimber implied, cross-reference fields (REF and PAGEREF) can
use this switch.

Subject: TOC hyperlinks in Word
Bonnie, et al:
I do not believe there is an option that one specifically selects or
deselects
in order to make Word TOC entries hyperlinks; Word assumes you want
that kind of
navigation. If changing the heading style causes problems, I
suggest returning
to the options for the TOC and making sure that all of the desired
styles are
selected for inclusion in the TOC.
There is an option to create a hyperlink when you insert a
cross-reference.
Hope this is useful.
