I usually only use two types of fonts in a document. I find if you use too
many fonts, the reader's eye doesn't know where to go. I just layed out a
publicity flyer for a local storyteller and we had a long discussion on the
number of fonts she used in her previous flyers (she had a different font
for each line, and some pretty wild ones at that). I managed to talk her
down to three fonts, although two were similar.
But I digress...
For Body Text, I use either Times Roman or Book Antigua for the bulk of the
text. To highlight terms or GUI item names, I apply a character style of
For Chapter titles, I use varying sizes of Serif (Times Roman/Book Antigua)
or Sans-Serif (Arial).
My rule of thumb for using Serif or Sans Serif fonts is:
* If there's a lot of text, go Serif.
* If it's only a bit of text (like a title or a term), go Sans Serif.
Of course, all that change if you're talking online documentation. But I
think you were referring to printed docs, right?
