I never hyphenate, period.
The subject matter of most tech.doc's nowadays is complicated enough without my readers having to follow the words back and forth to figure out that "thrombocytopeneuria" is what I *meant.*

I've never found a way to make a non-breaking en dash-
if someone knows a trick, that'd be great.
Try inserting non-breaking spaces before and after the dash, and then hiding the spaces.
