Max Wyss noted, in his post about using u as a substitute for the mu
symbol:

This isn't exactly accurate. The American National Metric Council "Metric
Editorial Guide" says (under Units and Symbols):

"The General Conference on Weights and Measure approved "L" and "l" as
alternative symbols for liter. Since the letter symbol "l" can easily be
confused with the numeral "1," the symbol "L" is recommended for U.S. use."

p.s. Most word-processing systems these days have such basic symbols as the
mu available.
