Hermes Softlab of Ljubljana, Slovenia is sponsoring the conference,
"Where East Meets West: Technical Communications and Usability," from
29-31 October 1998 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Hermes SoftLab is a software development company and one of the most
successful businesses in Slovenia. Slovenia is known as that small
country "on the sunny side of the Alps," surrounded by Austria, Italy,
Hungary and Croatia.

The conference will feature two well-known technical communicators, Saul
Carliner and Paula Berger and two well-known usability experts, Ginny
Redish and Evelyn Williams.

The conference consists of 1 day of preconference workshops and 2 days
of elective sessions and progressive (roundtable) discussions. The
sessions will be divided into two tracks - one for technical
communications and one for usability.

You are invited to present a paper at one of the 24 elective sessions or
lead a discussion. Please send a one-page description of the paper or
discussion you would like to hold. The topic can be either in the
technical communication or usability track.

Topics that might be addressed in the technical communication track
include:

* Human-computer interaction
* Information design
* XML
* Project management
* Copyright law
* Visual communication
* Writing and editing
* Business trends in the field of technical communications

Topics that might be addressed in the usability track include:

* Web page design, maintenance, writing for the Web.
* User centered design
* task analysis
* studying the users
* information overload
* minimalism
* project management
* designing vs. programming
* supporting user tasks
* localization
* training designers
* training TCs

Note: One of our target audiences for this conference will include those
who have been working in the professions of technical communications and
usability, but do not know they have been. They simply have not known
what to call their work.

Please send your papers by 30 July 1998 to Carol Chubiz, carol -at- hermes -dot- si
