Karen Schriver's book _Dynamics in Document Design_ has a lot of
historical info in it, not about "tech writing" per se, but printed
(and online) documents in general, which would certainly include tech
docs.
Try to get a copy of the first printing, or third--if there is a
third. The second printing has screwed up front matter. I got a first
printing (two actually) from Crown Books in December 1997, but they
had been there since February 1997. Anything you may order from Amazon
or Barnes & Noble online is probably a second printing.
