The best place I've found for answers to your questions is the U.S. Copyright
Office web page. Go to any search engine and type "copyright". The .gov site
contains FAQs, Copyright Basics, application forms, and anything else you can
think of. They also specifically address the issue of copyright protection
for works posted to the Internet.
