Video Home System.

The system -- which had lines-of-resolution below beta -- was choosen as
the home standard because of longer playing/recording time.

Beta is still being used in a majority of television studios. The tapes
are the same, but the play time is only 20 to 30 minutes for the L-500.

I'm probably one of the last home consumer users of the beta format -- as
my ED-BETA [extended defination] has a superior picture over S-VHS.
However, the marketplace decided otherwise!
