Joe,
Try making a Chapter Title paragraph style FIRST. This is how I've been
doing it for several years on Word 6 (again, ymmv with Word 7) and it's
perfect every time:

1. Choose Format -> Style, and either create a New style or select
ChapterTitle and click Modify.
2. In the Modify Style dialog box, choose Format... -> Numbering.
3. Choose the number style you like, then click Modify.
4. In the Modify Numbered List, add any text you might want before and
after the chap number, and click Font...
5. Choose a font & size--this is for the number part only--and click OK.
[FWIW, my chapter headings say "Chapter X:" in 10pt bold Arial]
6. You should be back at the Modify Numbered List box. If you want the
text part of the chapter title to start at a tab, set it here. Click OK again.
7. Click OK _again_ to get back to the Modify Style dialog box. The format
for the number is set.
8. NOW, go ahead and set the Chapter Title text style to 24pt [whatever]
by choosing Format... -> Font. This will ONLY change the text of the
chapter title itself, NOT the numbering portion.

Gotta love those Styles... Hope this helps!

Kim,
>Joe - you can control this in Word 6 by choosing Format>Heading
>Numbering.

We're using Word 7, which I should have said in my original post,
and "Format>Heading Numbering" does just what you suggest.

We did use that function to change the font size for each heading level,
but the problem persists (the chapter head's number and the major
heading's number are different sizes).
