I'm forwarding this from a friend, since I know many
techwhirlers are MSWord gurus. Please _don't_ respond to
the list... Matt isn't subscribed.

Matthew Stevens <mailto:mls -at- zeta -dot- org -dot- au> has asked the
copyediting-l group:

How can I open a Word 6J (Japanese) file in Word 6 (US)?

A client in Japan sends me work in English written by other
people. Most of the files are created in MS Word 6 on Macs,
but my copy of Word 6 (US) won't open those that have been
created in Word 6J.

I rang Mediocrosoft's help line, but I got a typical answer
- open the files in Word 97. What the Dilbert apparently
didn't know was that there is no Word 97 for Mac. AU$35
down the drain.

At the moment I have to get back to my client and ask him
to open the files in his Word 97 and resave them as RTF. It
works, but it's a pain having to go back to him time after
time.

I've tried the Mediocrosoft "Help Wizard" on the MS Web
site, but it keeps crashing Netscape (what a surprise). Mac
Link Plus Translators won't recognise the file type either,
and yet the file type and creator are identical to those of
"normal" Word 6 files.

Is there an answer?

Thanks in advance.
