Walter,
It is possible to share annotations for a help file on a network drive. By
default, WinHelp saves annotations to the local PC hard disk. What you
need to do is 1) create the annotations file on your PC. 2) Then copy that
ANN file to the same network directory as the help file. When users open
the help file now, WinHelp will "see" the ANN file in the help file
directory and use it for annotations.
A big caveat: Each time you re-compile a new version of the help file,
chances are that the annotations will be blown away. I say "chances are"
because the annotations are marked by offsets into the help file. For
example, if only the very last topic in the help file changes, then you may
be lucky and keep the annotations on topics appearing earlier in the file.
But in general, you should assume the worst--that annotations will not
survive with a recompiled help file.
Another possible problem is that users must have write access to the
network drive. If they only have read access, then they will be able to
see the annotations, but will get an error message if they attempt to add
their own annotations.
