If you haven't done any extensive customization to Word (that is, custom
macros, menus, autotext entries), delete your NORMAL.DOT. The next time you
open Word, it should create a new template for you. Then close Word and
write-protect the new NORMAL.DOT. That will get you running in Word so you
won't contaminate every other doc you need to work with.

Purchase an anti-virus program; there are plenty to choose from, like
McAfee (which I use), Symantec or Dr. Solomon. It's worth it, pure and
simple. The new ones scan for Word Macro viruses, as well as boot-sector
viruses, trojan horses, etc. McAfee, for example, cleans up docs and
templates with the Concept virus. Once you have it installed, keep the
virus definition files updated. McAfee sends out notification of new files
every 6 weeks or so, and they're free to download from their web site.

Another option is available at the Microsoft web site
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/antivirus/word/wordprot.htm). This doesn't
protect you from other types of viruses, however.

Whatever you do, tell your client to do the same.
