permanent jobs in DC area?

Subject: permanent jobs in DC area?

A tech writer friend of a friend is considering relocating to Washington, DC,
which is where I work. She has a concern about the area, though. She has heard
that all the work here is heavily dependent on the federal government and so
when Congress slashes the budget, jobs vanish.

My experience has shown otherwise -- and I have also heard that contractors here
are steadily getting work -- but I would be very interested to hear what others
say.

So whaddya say, guys? What do DC-area tech writers think? What have others
heard? And what about the feasibility of working as a contractor?

Thanks!
