TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Experience with a word processor, a spreadsheet,
and a web browser unreasonable or excessive?
If the requirement were to be advanced level in
all of them, I might agree, but I am not sure
anyone could put themselves out on today's market
at ANY level as a technical communicator using a
pen and paper, a calculator, and a telephone.
I would also venture a guess (I hope I am not out
of line) that a really good candidate, lacking in
experience with one of the three might be
considered on the strength of other qualifications
(e.g., an expert Framer, who had never really
spent much time on the Net).

Tom

My humble opinion alone. No flames to anyone or
implications to NatWest intended.

How many entry-level personnel are exposed to all of the tools you
mention prior to getting out into the working world?
Los Trancos Systems, L.L.C., a Silicon Valley provider of electronic
publications and information services, is looking for people who have a
demonstrated ability to write technical material and have experience in using
the basic computer skills: Microsoft Word or Framemaker, Netscape Navigator or
MS Internet Explorer, MS Excel or Lotus 1-2-3.
