Mike:
IMO, Word isn't a piece of crap and you are missing something. All you
have to do is remove the directly applied formatting; the text reverts
to the formats imposed by the styles. To do this:
Select the document with Ctrl+A.
Remove directly applied paragraph formats with Ctrl+Q.
Remove directly applied character formats with Ctrl+Spacebar.
If the original author did not use styles at all and applied all the
formatting directly, then - yes - you will need to assign styles to the
paragraphs.
