I have no real speed problems with IL 5.4.1 under MS-DOS 5 on a 90 MHz Pentium
and 16 MB RAM. OK, your documents should not exceed a certain limit, but that
can be way above 30 pages in a single file. The book option allows to create
much larger multi-file documents without real problems. I just finish a 200
page manual with interleaf.

OK, some Windows packages have more attractive surfaces. And at least IL 5 has
a radically different user interface from anything I know. But you can learn
it if you have access to an IL guru from time to time.
